Organic Perfect Blend

This USDA Organic Blend blend is low on acid, has antioxidants, is chemical-free, fair trade, and non-GMO. VitaCup says this blend is the healthiest cup of coffee to start your day. In fact, they even say it’s as good as it gets, but why? The coffee is grown in Guatemala on the high-altitude hillsides and these beans are some of the finest beans you’ll find around the world.
If you have a sensitive stomach, this could be the perfect blend for you. The chlorogenic acid antioxidants in the coffee are there to protect and maintain overall cell health.
Keep in mind that this is a dark roast brew. However, it is smooth because of its low-acid and dark roast. VitaCup pointed out that high acid may lead to tooth decay and discoloration but this blend has less acid so you have less to worry about in that department.

Genius Blend

The latest addition to the VitaCup portfolio, this drink takes the concept of vitamin-enriched coffee to a whole other plateau with its inclusion of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s), cinnamon, and turmeric.
MCT oil is the most prolific of the additions to this brew, and for a very good reason. Multiple studies suggest that supplementation proves beneficial for the brain and heart, while also helping to improve endurance. Most often found in high concentrations in coconut oil, MCT has established itself as a beloved darling of the health food industry over the last several years.
Not to be outdone, cinnamon helps to blunt cravings for sugar by balancing out blood glucose levels while also provides antioxidant benefits. And turmeric has shown to help prevent and reduce inflammation.
If you’re having a hard time deciding, there’s also a number of bundles with names like “Best Self” or “Bold Genius” that offer different mixes, and are a great way to experience different brews until you find the one that’s best suits your tastes.

Other Great Products from VitaCup
As if that wasn’t enough to make sure you get plenty of vitas in your cup, they have even more products. They have what they call “instant sticks.” These “instant sticks” make instant tea or coffee so you can have tea or coffee on the go.
There are also ground coffee packages for people that don’t want the sticks or the pods which means there are plenty of coffee options for everyone. In fact, you can even get some latte mix from VitaCup. Basically, if you like the thought of getting vitamins and health benefits from your coffee or tea then this is a great option for you.
Where to Buy VitaCup
VitaCup can be found on Amazon, on IntelligentBlends, OR you can purchase directly (sometimes with special promos) from the VitaCup site here.

FAQs

Question: Is Vitacup really healthy?
Answer: As we have said before, the VitaCup options include a blend of vitamins such as B1, B5, B6, B9, B12, D3, and natural antioxidants helping you boost your energy level, increase your metabolism, and enhance your mood. Of course, the way you receive these vitamins can be in a lower percentage as if they were naturally in coffee, such as Vitamin C in oranges. It is important to say that the vitamins added are not synthetic and it is a good plus to have in something that you are going to drink anyway.

Question: Do any of the French Vanilla or Vanilla Roast contain dairy?
Answer: VitaCup Company never uses dairy in any on their product. So you can calmly drink your smooth and soft vanilla breakfast coffee if you are lactose intolerant.

Question: Are VitaCups recyclable?
Answer: Yes! The thre parts in every cup are 100% recyclable. The aluminum lid, the plastic body which is BPA free and food graded, and the natural paper filter are 100% compostable.

So is VitaCup Worth it? Our Recommendation
For those new to the brand, it’s hard not to recommend starting with the Genius Blend. The addition of MCT oil makes this brew a nutritional powerhouse. But if you’re looking for a little variety or just want to sample all the best that VitaCup has to offer, then check out some of their bundles. The “Clever Genius” is a personal favorite.
VitaCup is more expensive than typical other pod products, but the price is easily justified when you consider all of the added health benefits of drinking their coffee.
To put it quite simply, you couldn’t purchase a high-quality vitamin supplement that parallels the blend used in a VitaCup pod and a box of your favorite brew for the same price that you could pick up a single box of VitaCup.
The convenience factor alone is enough to warrant support of their brand, and while you may come for a great cup of coffee, the way you’ll feel after enjoying it will keep you around as a fan for a very long time.

Bottom Line: VitaCup is well worth the money as "smart" coffee subtitute, perfect for busy professionals, parents, or anyone short on time, but wanting to prioritize optimal health. Check out the latest promos (15% off for new customers) at the VitaCup site here directly.

What You Should Get Instead

In the debate between iCoffee Mozart vs Opus, which one wins? Well…maybe neither. The iCoffee Mozart and Opus have both been discontinued. You can still find them, but you might not want to. Keep reading to see a list of features, pros, cons, and what similar coffee makers you can look into for your morning caffeine.

iCoffee Mozart Overview

The iCoffee Mozart is a versatile, convenient machine that’s reminiscent of the classic Keurig in aesthetics and style. Want a single cup of hot, delicious coffee brewed in a minute or less? This one could accomplish that.

Features:

 Spin brew technology
 72 oz. reservoir
 Uses all K-Cup style cups
 BPA-free
Removable drip tray (great for large mugs)
Makes 4 to 12 ounces at a time (choose from whole or half-ounce increments)
 Brews fast—less than 60 seconds
Automatically shuts off so you don’t have to worry about whether you left it on
Pretty standard coffee maker size at 13.1” x 10” x 13.1” (maybe a bit big)
 10.74 lbs
Has a knob to turn to select the number of ounces of coffee you want to make

iCoffee Mozart Is Not as Great as It Sounds
So what’s the bad news?
As mentioned above, iCoffee went out of business. Though you can still find their machines—including the iCoffee Mozart (and Opus)--in some stores and from a handful of sellers online, good luck with any warranties, broken pieces that need to be replaced, or any type of support you might need.
If you do decide you want to buy one anyway, check Amazon before making a purchase. At the time of this writing, they do not have the most reasonable prices on the iCoffee Mozart I’ve seen, by far.
However, there are more than 400 iCoffee Mozart reviews to read through to make sure you’re making the right decision. A lot of people loved their iCoffee Mozarts, but there are some reports of machines that didn’t even make it a year before they stopped working.
The prices could drop, too, though I doubt they’ll go low enough to justify the purchase. How low would they have to go for you to think it was worth it to buy the iCoffee Mozart?

iCoffee Opus Overview

Like the iCoffee Mozart, the Opus was a single-serve brewer with some features that made it convenient and fun to use. The prices on this one are a little lower than the Mozart ones that I saw, but still nowhere near worth it. For comparison’s sake, let’s see what it had to offer.

Features:

 Even bigger than the Mozart: 15” x 14.3” x 11.6”
 12.45 lbs
 Spin brew technology
 Uses K-Cups
 Removable reservoir
 Automatic shut-off
Adjustable drip tray to accommodate larger mugs
Similar in looks to the Mozart and classic Keurig; had a knob to turn to select the number of ounces of coffee you want, just like the Mozart

More Bad News
Yep, that bad news above applies here, too. You could buy the iCoffee Opus, but you’d be better off looking for a different coffee maker from a brand that’s still in business. Even a great deal on a coffee maker at the time can turn into a bad one as soon as something major goes wrong.

iCoffee Mozart vs Opus Compared
Well, they have a lot in common. Both have been discontinued, so there’s no clear winner on that one.

They could take K-Cups and make coffee relatively quickly.
Opus has a slightly bigger reservoir, at 75 ounces compared to 72.
Both would brew up to 12 ounces of coffee, in half-ounce increments.
 They looked almost identical.
Both have hit-or-miss reviews; some people loved their machines and had no problems, while others had trouble either right out of the box or a few months into the machine’s use.

There’s really no huge difference between the two coffee makers in the iCoffee Mozart vs Opus comparison. Either would get the job done (as long as you didn’t get a lemon). They both seemed to make great-tasting coffee.
If you were to get a working machine at a reasonable price—either of them—you probably wouldn’t be disappointed. It’s when things start to wear out (sometimes sooner than later) that the problems start to appear.

Should You Get the iCoffee Mozart or Opus?
Honestly? Neither.
Maybe if you find a brand new one for less than $20.00 at a garage sale, you should (in that case, either one will do) buy that one, but even that comes with risks and you could be out $20.00 either immediately or in a couple of months. You’ll just have to decide if the risk is worth it for you.
Between the number of complaints that they’ve stopped working, are too hard to clean, and people’s general disappointment in the machines even when they paid the normal (usually less than $70.00) price, I highly recommend looking elsewhere for your next single-serve coffee maker.
I will point out that eBay has the most reasonable prices (at retail or just below) at the time of this writing. You could go there and make an offer to get one at a lower price.
A lot of sellers (more so in other places than on eBay) are trying to take advantage of the fact that the machines have been discontinued and sell them for much higher than retail prices. You could get top-of-the-line current models for almost the same as what some people are asking for the iCoffee Mozart and Opus.

Other Options to Consider Instead
Luckily, there are plenty of options on the market that have comparable or superior lists of features. These models are around the same size as the iCoffee Mozart and Opus. In some cases, they’ll take up even less room on the counter.

1. Classic Keurig

It makes sense that the K-Classic™ Coffee Maker would be a viable option since the iCoffee Mozart and Opus both were single-serve brewers that could use K-Cups.
It’s about $120.00, but you may be able to catch this one on sale pretty easily. The water reservoir will hold 48 ounces. That’s significantly less than the iCoffee Mozart and Opus coffee makers, but if you don’t need a lot more than that, this is still a great option.
It makes coffee in a minute or less, a cup at a time. You can only make up to 10 ounces of coffee at a time, though. If you wanted 12 or even 14, you’ll have to go with another option.
Get it in rhubarb (red) or classic black.

2. Cuisinart SS-10

It costs about $150.00 and holds 72 ounces of water in the reservoir, similar to the amounts the iCoffee Mozart and Opus held. It also uses the K-Cups just like they did. In addition, it comes with its own reusable filter cup so you can use your own coffee. It makes 5 to 12 ounces of coffee at a time, but not in the half-ounce options the Mozart and Opus did.
Use the hot water option for soups, hot chocolate, tea, etc. It’s easy to clean, has a gorgeous blue LCD screen, and a removable drip tray for fitting bigger mugs. The overall design is sleek and looks a lot more modern than the iCoffee Mozart and Opus did.
It’s programmable and has auto shut-off. You can also adjust the temperature.

3. Cuisinart Coffee Center

The Cuisinart Coffee Center isn’t exactly the same. It will actually brew a pot of coffee, too. If you were looking at single-serve machines but wondering if you’d ever need to make a whole pot, this might be the perfect medium you were hoping for.
One drawback to this model is that it’s only able to make 10 ounces of coffee on the single-serve side at a time, which is a little less than most other coffee makers. The reservoir is significantly smaller than that of the iCoffee models and some others on this list at a capacity of just 40 ounces.
It does come equipped to let you use your own coffee—not a K-Cup—though, so you’ll get a little freedom from that. There’s a charcoal water filter to keep your coffee tasting as fresh as possible. On the carafe side, you’ll be able to brew 12 cups at a time and choose between regular or bold strengths. There’s another charcoal water filter here, plus a gold-toned coffee filter to make sure your coffee tastes great.

Hamilton Beach FlexBrew® Single Serve Plus

There’s also the Hamilton Beach FlexBrew® Single Serve Plus (or Single Serve with Removable Water Reservoir) to consider.
It won’t cost much more than the iCoffee Mozart or Opus coffee makers, and you’ll be able to get your hands on one much more easily. The Plus is about $60.00 and the one with the 40 oz. the removable water reservoir is about $80.00.
Use K-Cups or your own ground coffee in it; it’s versatile like that. You can even use paper filters and/or make a little more coffee at a time, too—14 ounces for a travel mug. It also automatically shuts off when it’s done. Either of these will be easy and intuitive to use. You can also choose between regular and bold coffee strengths.

This might be a source of disappointment if you are a lover of high-tech gadgetry, or expect R2-D2 to companion you on a mission. This officially licensed piece of Star Wars merchandise is 4” in diameter and stands 6.5” tall including Artoo’s clever lid which will help keep your brew piping hot. This cup is made of strong porcelain and holds up well to washes and use.

This version is a collector item, that includes a hinge so you might want to avoid putting it in the dishwasher. We suggest using it every day for an enjoyable, out-of-this-world coffee drinking experience, and just hand-washing it. There's also another version of the R2-D2 mug that includes a removable lid.

Initially, they launched their business in Durham, N.C. However, over the last two decades, they’ve gradually expanded their chain of coffee shops across the East Coast.

They also sell their coffee beans online and have launched numerous training centers across the States.

What Coffee Do They Produce?
The short answer is lots. The longer answer, we hash out below...

Counter Culter Coffee offers consumers a vast variety of coffees all year long. This is both a blessing and a curse. Although it’s fun to explore different flavors and blends of Joe, it can make choosing your roast a bit of a challenge.

However, if you’re looking for some guidance, their coffees fall into one of three categories:

 Year-round,
 Single-origin,
 Limited-release

If you’re unsure how to choose your first bag of beans, use the umbrella titles listed below to help steer your choice.
Year-Round
As the title suggests, these blends are available all year round. To achieve the familiar flavor described on the packet, Counter Culter tends to combine a mixture of coffees from different farms- the result of which is delicious!
Single-Origin
These coffees are typically named after the farm the beans are harvested from or the community or co-op that produced the beans. Sometimes, these fall into the year-round category, other times, there’s limited availability.

Generally, these beans work best for brewed coffee, though more and more consumers are using them for espresso- so it’s down to you how you brew them!

Limited-Release
One of the things we like the most about Counter Culter is that they produce a 'limited-release coffee at least once every three months. As you've probably guessed, this is the category that showcases rarer, specialty coffees. These blends usually have an interesting story behind their creation, which adds to the intrigue and excitement of getting a bag in the mail.

Limited releases are as they sound- limited. They’re only available once, and for a set time only. So, you have to catch them while you can! It’s a fun way of broadening your coffee-drinking horizons. However, the downside is that if you get hooked on a flavor, you can't repurchase it- not cool!

A classic example of their limited-release blends includes single-farmer lots. As the title suggests, these beans are produced by one farm. Sometimes, the batches are so small they’re only available for a couple of days! You have to really keep your finger on the pulse to enjoy the full variety of coffee Counter Culter has to offer.

One Thing to Note Before Buying a Bag of Beans
Counter Culter only ships whole beans. This is amazing for coffee-lovers who value freshness. This roaster is a firm believer that coffee tastes best when it’s brewed within half an hour of grinding. So, if you’re a home-brewer without the time or inclination to grind your coffee beans- this isn’t the brand for you.

A word of advice, if you haven’t ground coffee before- don’t sweat. It’s a pretty simple process to get to grips with.

What Do People Think of Their Coffee?
I took the liberty of scouring the internet to see what other people made of Counter Culter’s coffee; this should give you a better idea of the quality of their beans:

Coffeereview.com recently evaluated Counter Culter Coffee’s ‘Big Trouble.’ They described the overall taste as: ‘brisk but sweet’ with a ‘citrusy finish in the short, carob and elm in the long.’ They recommend coffee drinkers who ‘enjoy an understated balance of sweetness and citrus-and-nut briskness’- should give this blend a try. You won’t be disappointed!

Whereas, over on Amazon, their Fast Forward Whole Bean Coffee] boasts a 3.3-star rating out of five. Here a few of the reviews customers left on this listing:

‘Arrived quickly and exactly as described.’

‘Good stuff!’

‘This is my favorite coffee right now. The description (light, sweet, nutty) is accurate. This coffee is a gem. As another reviewer stated, it would be nice if this were single-origin (a good light roast can do without the Ethiopian beans), but I can't be too picky. My one complaint (and it's minor) is the price. I wish I got a little more than 12 OZ of beans for $20. Because of that, this will not be my regular coffee’.

The final comment here makes a good point; if you have a limited budget, this probably isn’t the brand for you. Whereas, over on Yelp- you’ll see they boast a 5-star rating! All in all, it's pretty clear to see that if you’re after good quality coffee, Counter Culter is a pretty safe bet.
What Makes Counter Culter Different From Other Roasters?
Unlike other roasters, they’re genuinely inspired by the farmers and cooperatives growing their coffee. They seek to continually educate themselves and others on how best to brew coffee to achieve the best taste possible (as highlighted by the numerous training centers they’ve launched across the States- more on that later!).

In addition to the above, Counter Culter also has a proven track record for pioneering sustainability. They've made it their mission to cultivate healthy relationships with the farmers while affecting positive change in their communities. For example, their ‘seed program’ gives small grants to coffee producers for them to launch either a social or environmental sustainability initiative- how awesome is that?!

They’re also pioneering ‘climate change adaptation research.’ Coffee farmers are under a lot of strain. They continually have to change the way they do things to handle the drastic changes in weather brought about by climate change.

In light of this, Counter Culter practice what they preach by trying to reduce their own carbon footprint while helping farmers identify changing conditions and implementing strategies that’ll help them adapt their farming methods.

Last but not least, Counter Culter also assesses what farmers are doing to promote sustainability. This is imperative to ensure continual improvement. Naturally, this varies from farm to farm, so Counter Culter has decided to work with each individual producer to assess how they can improve. They set specific sustainability goals for the farmers to work towards each year; this helps to ensure progress is made.

How and When Is Their Coffee Roasted?
Counter Culter coffee is roasted to order and shipped the next business day after purchase. This ensures timely delivery and the freshest roast. However, because they don’t warehouse coffee, there's always a chance that due to roasting capacities you won't get your order on time.

Yet, on the whole, they boast a pretty good track record of getting their shipments out on time. The biggest drawback of this method is that their coffee is only available in the States and Canada. Obviously, there are a ton of coffee-lovers across the globe that can't get their hands on a bag of beans.

Also, their ordering system doesn't allow for order scheduling. This isn’t ideal for coffee shop owners, who need an accessible arrangement for scheduling deliveries.

The closest thing they offer is a ‘Custom Coffee Subscription.’ When you order a subscription Counter Culter sends a batch of coffee to you (that matches the frequency you’ve selected).

If you’re ordering a year-round subscription, you have the luxury of selecting the coffee you want. However, single-origin subscriptions are curated by Counter Culter, so you can’t select the blend that’s sent to you. It goes without saying that both the availability and seasonality dictate the single-origin coffee you receive.

The benefit of taking out a subscription is that you’ll receive 10% off your order as well as a lower flat rate shipping fee of $3.

We love that they send out an email reminder ten days before your order ships- this gives you ample time to cancel your order should your requirements change.

This is what a consumer on Tripadvisor had to say about their subscription: ‘Their coffee and subscription packages are hard to beat. Trust me I've tried. I enjoy their monthly single-source subscription service that provides two 12 oz bags of coffee that change month-to-month.’
The Packaging
The colored bags are beautifully minimalistic. You can recognize a Counter Culter bag from a mile off; their logo sits prominently against a white strip. Each of their 12-ounce bags is made of Biotre film. Not only, is this packaging sustainable and biodegradable but this film helps keep the coffee beans gorgeously fresh.

Where Can I Get My Hands on a Cup of Counter Culter Coffee?
As previously alluded to, you can visit one of their coffee shops located across the East Coast. Some of their more popular bases include:

 Durham
 New York
 Philadelphia
 D.C.
 Boston
 Asheville
 Atlanta
 Chicago

If that isn’t a practical solution for you, head online and order a bag of coffee from counterculturecoffee.com.

What’s All This Talk of Counter Culture Coffee Education?
Throughout this review, we've referenced Culter Coffee’s commitment to education.

Let’s delve into this in greater detail.
Brewing Guides
On their website, they offer fabulous tips on how to brew your coffee to perfection. In no time at all, you’ll be customizing recipes to suit your own unique tastes.
Events
Culter Coffee has opened numerous training centers that put on free events called ‘Tastings at Ten.’ This is where they brew and taste various coffees and explore where the roasts came from. If you’re looking to perfect the art of coffee brewing- this is the place to be!

However, if you’re a professional barista, or own a coffee shop, you’re more likely to benefit from their ProDev events. These help keep you on top of all the latest industry trends and methods.
Final Thoughts
Whether you want delicious homebrew, a trip to a top-notch coffee shop, or some much-needed education on the subject, then Culter Coffee won’t disappoint. If you have money to splash on a cup of Joe, then Culter Coffee is a fabulous choice for your morning cuppa- or, if your finances don’t allow for frequent purchases, perhaps a one-off treat is in store!

Simple Principles of Pour Over Coffee
You have a carafe that holds the water, as well as a plastic filter holder that you place on top your cup. Fill the filter with coffee ground, pour the hot water into the filter, and let the coffee drip slowly down until your cup is filled. It's simple, practical, and--best of all--cheap! As long as you have a good water heating system, you can make coffee in a matter of minutes with little to no energy use.

We've done the research to bring you the best pour over coffee makers on the market. We evaluated not just the price, but also quality, ease of use, cleanliness, lifespan, and nifty extra features. Below, you'll find out list of the top 5 best pour over coffee makers around:
#1 Pick: Melitta Ready Set Joe Single Cup Coffee Brewer

This beautiful little pour-over coffee maker is our #1 pick -- not only because it's beautifully inexpensive (just around $6!), but it's one of the most practical to use.

It's as simple and easy as any pour-over coffee maker: add a filter, fill with coffee grounds, pour in the water, and let it drip into your cup. It can be used atop just about any mug, travel cup, or coffee carafe, delivering a rich, delicious brew in a matter of minutes. Once your coffee is made, you can pop it into the dishwasher to ensure it's as clean as possible.

It's lightweight, compact, durable, and makes a surprisingly tasty cup of coffee. You'll need to have paper filters on hand, but considering how little you'll pay for the coffee maker itself, it's definitely a budget-friendly buy.

Runner Up: Bartelli Paperless Pour Over Coffee Dripper

For around $20, this is one of the best purchases on our list! It may be slightly pricier than some of the other pour-over coffee makers on this list, but it has one unique feature: a built-in filter. You never need to use a paper filter again, as the pour-over coffee maker has its own integrated filter.

The metallic filter will encourage the natural essential oils and flavonoids of the coffee to drip into your cup, rather than being soaked into the paper filter. There is far less waste with this design, and you'll find that you get a much stronger, more concentrated brew every time.

But don't think you're going to end up with a cup full of coffee ground! The filter is laser-cut, and the holes are so small that not even the most finely-ground coffee will slip through. It's the perfect option for those who want to make coffee the right way, according to their preferences (coarser or fine ground).

Best of all, the filter is 100% dishwasher safe, easy to wash, and surprisingly durable. Ceramic and glass break and plastic is easily scratched, but metal is able to stand up to a lot of wear and tear. It's the perfect pour-over coffee maker for those who make a lot of coffee at home. A VERY good investment!

Runner Up: Tanors Ceramic Coffee Dripper

This is one of those pour-over coffee makers you have to have to impress guests! The beautiful, sparkling white ceramic will pair perfectly with any china or ceramic tea and coffee sets, and the base of the coffee maker will fit most cups. It's a versatile coffee maker that produces a quality cup of coffee in just a few minutes.

The fact that it's ceramic means that it will be cleaner and more sterile than a plastic pour-over coffee maker. You'll get crisp, fresh flavors with every cup of coffee, and you won't have to worry about residue build-up (a common problem with plastic). The ceramic also keeps the coffee nice and hot with every brew!

What makes this coffee maker unique is the oversized hole in the base. It allows you to brew the coffee at your own speed--slower for more concentrated flavor, faster to conserve grinds or fill a larger pot more quickly.

Be warned: ceramic is more likely to chip and crack than plastic. You'll need to be careful when washing this coffee maker, especially in the dishwasher. It's better to wash by hand, but avoid using soap! A rinse with warm water is all you need to keep the coffee maker clean.

Best of all, it costs you just around $11! Talk about a great product at a great price.

Runner Up: Chemex 8-Cup Classic Series Glass Coffeemaker

This over-sized coffee maker is ideal for entertaining, as it will produce 4 or 5 normal-sized mugs of coffee. You'll impress your guests with your unique coffee brewing set-up, and they'll be able to watch their coffee percolate as they relax.

The glass carafe is able to hold up to 8 cups (5 ounces each) of coffee, but the coffee maker can be purchased in sizes ranging from 3 to 10 cups. The glass is durable and break-resistant, but you will still need to be careful with how you handle it. One fall, and it WILL shatter.

The beauty of this carafe is that it's 100% glass. Glass is stain-resistant, meaning it will be easy to keep clean and won't soak up the flavors of previous brews. Rinse it with a bit of warm water (no soap needed), and you'll find that the glass carafe stays clean and fresh with every use. With no "moving parts", it's a user-friendly carafe indeed.

On the downsides, it is ONLY compatible with Chemex filters, however, so you won't be able to use them with regular coffee filters. You'll also spend upwards of around $40 on this carafe--you're paying more for the appearance than for quality. It's a beautiful, well-designed glass carafe with a wooden collar, and it will enhance your living room or dining room décor.

The large hole at the base of the coffee dripper allows you to make the coffee as fast or slow as you want, giving you a larger quantity or more concentrated flavors as desired.

Instead of the classic "ribbed" patterns, this great coffee maker has a swirling pattern inside that helps to control the flow of the water and enhances the brewing process. Such a small change, but it can make all the difference in the flavor of your coffee!

In addition to being much larger than its competitors, the Breville Milk Café also provides users with the ability to add ingredients directly to the frothing vessel, so you can make a rich and creamy hot chocolate or chai by adding syrups directly into the milk.
Pros of the Milk Cafe:

Largest Capacity: For steaming a large volume of milk, the Breville milk warmer and frother doesn’t really have any competition. Many other milk steamers require complete disassembly and hand-washing, so the ability to toss the steamer into the dishwasher is a big time-saver.
High Heat Settings: The Milk Café also gets a lot hotter than many other home steamers: it can heat milk up to 170° F, which is perfect for extra-hot drinks and making cappuccinos and lattes.

Cons of the Milk Cafe:

High Price Point: Most online retailers sell the Milk Café for about $129, which is more than twice the price of the other two milk steamers on this list.
Size: Because the Milk Café has such a large capacity for foamed milk, it also takes up a lot more space than many other milk steamers on the market. You’ll need a lot more storage space if you intend to stow it away between uses, or a significant amount of counter space if you want to leave it out.
Occasional Mechanical Issues: While the Breville Milk Café also has more advanced technologically than many of its competitors, some of that technology can occasionally malfunction. Some common issues are the milk foaming disc separating from its housing and a slight wobble between the top and bottom of the machine.

In my opinion, the benefits of the Milk Café milk steamer far outweigh the negatives. If you’re not on a budget, spending the extra money for the Breville will definitely pay off, and you may find yourself spending less at your local coffee shop because you can achieve the same drinks at home.

#2 Epica Automatic Electric Milk Frother

For buyers looking for an affordable and dependable automatic milk steamer, the Epica is a really handy model, especially if you’re only looking to prepare one drink at a time. It’s compact, so storage is less of an issue, and it has several features that make it a great choice for home baristas.
Pros:

Affordable: The Epica frother is about half the price of the Milk Café, and can sometimes be found for even less, and it’s very well constructed for its price point. If you’re not looking to break the bank, this is an affordable step up from a frothing wand.
Hot and Cold Milk Settings: The ability to froth hot or cold milk makes this a really versatile machine. Some users even like to put the milk through a cold frothing cycle before adding heat to provide their drinks with extra volume. Operation is also very easy, with single-button control over every setting.
Vacuum Insulation: I love that the Epica is vacuum insulated to keep milk at a consistent temperature. You won’t lose heat after you froth your milk, which gives you extra time to pour and enjoy your drinks. Cold frothed milk will maintain its temperature, which is great for iced lattes at home.

Cons:

Capacity: The Epica milk warmer and frother can hold up to 250ml for heating milk, and 125ml for frothing. This definitely makes it a single-serving home steamer, and you may find that you want some extra capacity for making multiple drinks.
Cleaning: Although stainless steel is relatively easy to clean and maintain, the Epica can’t be submerged in water and is prone to buildup of burnt milk at the bottom of its vessel. Washing after each drink will prevent this from happening, but you may really need to scrub the frother.
Low Temperature: Some users have reported issues with the Epica frother’s ability to heat milk to the right temperature for cappuccinos and lattes. It will heat milk to the bottom of the temperature range for hot drinks, but don’t expect to make an extra-hot latte with this steamer.

The Epica milk frother is a great model if you’re just starting out with home steaming, but it does have some drawbacks. Still, it is easy to operate and doesn’t take a lot of space, so if you’re only making one drink at a time it’s a great home milk steamer.

#3 Secura Automatic Electric Milk Frother and Warmer

For a balance between price and capacity, a Secura is a great option, earning it a spot on our list of best milk steamer and frothers. While none of the available models steam as much milk as Breville’s Milk Café, the largest Secura definitely comes close to rivaling the pricier model’s capacity.
Pros:

Wide Range of Options: Secura makes frothers in several sizes, making it easy to find a model that suits your everyday home steaming needs. Steaming a single drink at a time? The 250ml model is your best bet. 300ml and 500ml models provide extra flexibility.
Capacity: The largest Secura holds 500ml, which is enough milk to make several drinks at once. If you’re looking for a large capacity but a smaller home steamer, this is an excellent option that balances price and capacity.
Affordable: You can buy the smallest Secura frother for around $40 online, which is a great price for steaming one drink at a time. The larger models aren’t much more expensive: even the large capacity frother is only $60, half the price of Breville’s Milk Café.

Cons:

Temperature: One of the biggest strikes against the Secura frother is the same as with the Epica: milk just doesn’t get hot enough. The frother will heat milk to the low level of the acceptable temperature range, but you definitely won’t get very hot drinks.
Leaking: The Secura milk frother is particularly prone to leaks, which can leave your countertop covered in steamed milk. The seal between the rotary staff and the vessel seems to be the main cause of this problem.
No Customer Support: Many users have reported issues with customer support from Secura. Hopefully, this will never be an issue, but if your frother experiences mechanical issues, you may be out of luck when it comes to finding support or service.

I like the Secura as an affordable but versatile home milk steamer and frother, but I would want something a little more dependable for everyday use. Daily wear on the components can definitely exacerbate the leaking issues.

Wrapping Up on Milk Steamers
I like all of these steamers, and any one of them would make a great addition to a home barista’s kitchen. Ultimately, the decision comes down to questions of price and capacity: if you’re only steaming a drink at a time, there’s not much of a need to go all out and buy a 3-cup steamer, but if you’ve got a whole family of latte drinkers, you’re going to want the extra capacity of a larger maker.

Does it really work? The short answer: Like a charm. The longer answer is a little more complicated.
What Is the Coffee Sock?
First of all, what is it? A handmade (in Austin, Texas) reusable filter made from certified organic cotton. They absorb some of the oils of the coffee, making it taste cleaner. Once it’s all worn out after about six months, it’s compostable.

How Do You Use It?
For the most part, you use it the way you’d use any paper filter. You have to make sure you get the right kind (and there are several) for your brewing method, whether you use an auto-drip brewer, Chemex, AeroPress, Kalita Wave coffee dripper, or mason jar (for cold brew).

You insert the Coffee Sock just like any other filter and brew your coffee just the same.

Before you use it the first time, you have to boil it for about 10 minutes, then rinse. Each type has its own set of instructions, but the kind I bought said to put the seam in the Chemex spout.

Pour the coffee over the grounds as usual, then toss the grounds. Rinse the filter and hang it up to dry.

The package says you should only have to boil them about every two months unless they’re contaminated by something in the kitchen, used with perishable foods, or blocked by coffee oil buildup. Other than that, it’s rinse, dry, and repeat.
What I Bought

Because I usually review coffees using a Chemex, I decided to purchase the Coffee Sock made for the six- to- 13-cup Chemex (from Amazon). I was pleasantly surprised to find that I got not just one Coffee Sock, but two. I thought I was only buying one at the time.

You can expect to pay somewhere between $12.00 and $20.00 for any of the filters. Commercial filters are more (like about $80.00 for a five-gallon size). If you want a kit (like the hiker’s kit or a cold brew setup), you’ll pay a little more.
Packaging
The Coffee Socks I ordered came in a long, thin cardboard box with lots of good information on the outside. Despite limited space, I felt completely confident that I knew how to use and care for the Coffee Sock without going online to look anything up.
My Coffee Sock Experience
I drank the coffee black each time I tried it. The first time I used the Coffee Sock, I was in awe of how “clean” my coffee tasted. I suspect that it really did hold onto some of the oils that would’ve made it through a paper filter. The coffee was less complex but shockingly good. I was sold. My giant cup of coffee tasted the way it does when I get it straight from the café where they roast the beans.

The second time wasn’t as pleasant of an experience. Instead of a clean taste, something just tasted “off.” There was still a lack of complexity, but this time it was almost as if I could taste the fabric. Maybe it was an effect of old coffee oils that were caught in the filter despite the fact that it had been thoroughly rinsed after the last use.

At that point, I was ready to write a somewhat neutral Coffee Sock review. I actually wrote it all out (with plans to change it later—before publishing it at all--if I changed my mind) and said, “Yes, it works, but you’ll have to boil it way more often than they claim. It’s probably best for occasional use, but I would not use this daily because boiling it is so time-consuming.”

I’d almost given up on it at that Cup #2 point, but I decided to experiment with it some more. I wanted to test it more before putting up an official review. Good thing I did.

The third cup was just like the first one. I have no idea what happened. The Coffee Sock was emptied and rinsed each time, with no boiling between the second and third cups. I just wanted to throw that bit of information in because I don’t want people to buy it, try it a handful of times, get to a bad cup as I did well before it’s time to boil the Coffee Sock again and toss it in frustration.

Coffee Sock Options
Coffee Socks aren’t just for traditional Chemex brewing.
Cold Brew
In addition to cold brew filters meant for at-home use, there are options for hiking and commercial use. Get a kit with a jar, water bottle, extra-large container (commercial) or just get the Coffee Sock itself.
Hot Brew
Hot brew Coffee Sock options include:

 Basket
 3-Cup Chemex
 6-10 Cup Chemex
 6-10 Cup Half-Moon Chemex
 Disk
 Drip #2 Cone
 Drip #4 Cone
 Drip #6 Cone
 Hario® v60 Style
 Kalita® Wave Style
 Travel
TeaSock (not technically for coffee, but still worth mentioning in case you like tea almost as much as coffee)

Options for Hikers
Yes, hikers! I love how thorough this company is. When I went camping, I wondered how we were going to make coffee. It all worked out in the end, but the Coffee Sock would’ve made things so much easier.

The cold brew option fits a wide mouth Nalgene or Klean Kanteen bottle. Make it overnight or during a long hike (it takes six to 10 hours). Unfortunately, there’s no hot version other than the handheld travel filter.

That one’s not specifically for hikers, but you could probably make it work if the hiking is part of a short camping trip and you’ll have a way to heat water. Of course, if it’s just a day trip, make your coffee before you leave and then put it in a dependable travel mug that’ll keep it hot as long as you need it to.
Accessories
Beyond the Coffee Sock itself and all the kits that can go with them, the website offers accessories, too. Pick up a gift card, bottle, wide mouth lid, sink strainer, a hanging chain for drying Coffee Socks, spice packs, or even a little coffee or tea.
Custom Filters
If you need a type of filter you don’t see on the site, you can send them a message and have them make one that will fit your needs. That’s the beauty of a handmade product and a company that cares. This means there’s pretty much no reason not to try a Coffee Sock if you’re interested.
Pros and Cons
This seemed like a product with only a list of pros at first, but there are some cons that can’t be ignored.
Pros
The pros are pretty obvious, but let’s go over them anyway:

You’re going to save money because you won’t have to buy paper filters all the time. They claim that one Coffee Sock replaces 500 paper filters. That’s a lot. In my experience, this is especially nice because I either have to remember to place an order or drive an hour (round trip) to get more.
You’re creating less waste, which is good for the environment.
The cold brew kit looks especially nice.
It’s just as easy to use as the paper filters when it comes to the coffee-making process itself.
 They’re compostable.
There’s a wide variety of Coffee Sock versions to choose from, so it should work for you no matter how you like to make your coffee. I was surprised to see them for anything but pour-overs.

Cons
I was surprised to discover cons, so you might be too:

You may get a mysteriously “off” cup of coffee every now and then like I did on my second try with it. I haven’t gotten to the two-month point with it yet, but I can imagine there’s a noticeable flavor difference when it’s getting close to time to boil the Coffee Sock
You’ll need somewhere to let them air-dry because you can’t just stuff them back in a drawer when you’re done.
It’s slightly messier than a paper filter because you can’t just pick the whole thing up and throw it out. You’ll have to dump the grounds, shake out the excess, rinse, and find somewhere out of the way for the Coffee Sock to drip dry.

My Coffee Sock Review: Does It Really Work? Yes and No
It works. But you’ll have to do a little work too, from time to time. You will need to boil it. It is a little messier than paper filters. But is that all worth it for a better environment, savings, and a cleaner-tasting cup of coffee? I think so. I’m impressed, even with the risk that I’ll get a repeat of my experience with the second cup I made from time to time.

At first, I thought I’d save the Coffee Sock for special occasions because it was a pain to deal with, between the constant boiling (that turned out to be unnecessary) and waiting for it to dry. I could stand to use it daily now, and I love that it makes my coffee-making experience seem more like a lovely ritual than the paper filters do. Now I want to try one of the cold brew kits.

They both make coffee by the cup or carafe, but there are some differences between the two that may make one model and break the other one for you. There are a few Keurigs that could compare to the Flexbrew, so I’ll break those down individually as well.
The Hamilton Flexbrew

The Hamilton Flexbrew is an affordable option for making single cups of coffee or a full carafe. It’s a pretty basic design that gets the job done.
Features

Brew a carafe or a single mug of coffee.
 It’s programmable.
You can choose whether to make your coffee bold or regular strength.
Each brewer has its own water reservoir.
Use the pause and serve feature to pour a cup of coffee before the whole pot has finished brewing.
It shuts itself off after two hours but it keeps your coffee warm until then.
There’s a removable cup rest that also works as a storage area for a brew basket or single-serve packs.
You can use K-Cups for single cups up to 10 ounces of your own grounds for a travel mug (14 ounces). Yep, that means you can choose to make your coffee from pods or ground coffee—even if you only want one cup.
It’s easy to clean, even the part that pierces the K-cups (it’s removable).
It’s slim so it’ll fit on the counter without taking up too much space (13.9”H x 10.24”W x 10.63”D).
It works with Melitta's #1 small paper filters.

Pros

It comes with the carafe so there’s no additional expense.
You can use K-Cups, but you don’t have to. You can use your own grounds (you can do this with the Keurigs too, using their reusable pods, but some of the Keurigs limit which pods you can use).
 It’s the least expensive option.
 It’s easy to clean.

Cons

You don’t get a lot of bells and whistles; it’s a pretty simple programmable design that allows you to make regular coffee by the cup or the pot.
It’s not the sleekest or most interesting model to look at, so if you’re big on kitchen aesthetics, you will probably want to at least consider other options before buying this one.
There’s just one model to choose from, so there aren’t options with more or fewer features the way there are with Keurig.

Comparable Keurig Models
There are a few Keurig models that are comparable to the Hamilton Beach Flexbrew. Some come with a list of additional features that may make it worth the upgrade, depending on your needs.
Keurig 250

The Keurig 250 is one of the closest models to the Hamilton Flexbrew. You can make a single cup or a carafe with it.
Features

The Keurig 250 has a slim design which means it won’t take up a lot of space on your counter (dimensions are 13.7”H x 9”W x 15”D).
There are over 500 varieties of coffee, tea, and specialty drinks you can purchase for this machine.
You can count on a one-minute brew time for cups of coffee.
 It has a 40-ounce reservoir.
There’s a 2-inch black and white touch display screen.
 Choose from four different cup sizes—4, 6, 8, or 10 ounces—or three carafe sizes (22, 26, or 30 ounces).
You can use K-Cups, K-Pods, or K-Mugs with it.
 It uses a Keurig® 2.0 My K-Cup® Reusable Filter.
There is a high altitude setting.
You can set your preferred language.
You’ll be able to control the strength of the brew.

Pros

It comes in a lot of different colors: Imperial Red, Black, White, Sandy Pearl, Turquoise, Peacock Blue, Plum Gray, and Oasis, so it’ll go beyond just blending in with your kitchen décor. You can get one that matches other colors in your kitchen or use it as an accent color.
It’s one of the less expensive Keurig models at around $130.00.

Cons

It costs more than the Hamilton Flexbrew—almost double.
You can only use Keurig 2.0 pods with this machine, which could make it more expensive to use overall.
The carafe is not included with the brewer, so if you want to make pots of coffee, you’ll need to make an additional purchase. That means spending more money (about $20.00 or $30.00, depending on the carafe and where you purchase it).

K425

The K425 is another comparable model to the Flexbrew, but it’s an upgrade from the Keurig 250.
Features

It’s slim so it’ll fit on most counters.
Hamilton Flexbrew vs Keurig Models: Which One Wins?
Now it’s time for the Hamilton Flexbrew vs Keurig models showdown. Is there a clear winner? Maybe, maybe not. It really boils down to which brand you trust more, aesthetics, and extra features. At their core, they’ll do the same things.
Coffee Options
You may find that you get a little more flexibility from the Hamilton Beach model simply because it doesn’t only take specific K-Cups. You will be using ground coffee in the Flexbrew no matter what since it doesn’t accept K-Carafe pods.

You’re slightly more limited with the Keurig machines (especially 2.0 models), though you can get a reusable cup and choose your own ground coffee, whether that’s from the grocery store, online, or a local roaster. It won’t matter as long as the Keurig can read the pod.
What Comes in the Box
The Hamilton Flexbrew wins on this one simply because the carafe comes with the machine. They don’t expect you to buy the machine with a gaping hole where the carafe should go, only to have to buy another piece for a complete set. In all fairness, the Keurigs don’t have a designated spot just for a carafe so if you don’t get one and simply make coffee by the cup, this may not even be an issue.
Size
They’re all about the same size, so unless you have a very specific amount of room for your new coffee maker, the size probably won’t be the deciding factor for you.
Comparison of Features
There are questions you can ask yourself to help you narrow down the Keurigs, then decide between the Keurig that best fits your lifestyle and the Flexbrew:

How often do you make a carafe of coffee, and when you do, how many ounces of coffee do you need?
How much does refilling a water reservoir bug you? Do you want to fit as much water as possible in there, just so you don’t have to refill often?
Do you like the way the two options look side-by-side (Flexbrew) or do you prefer to rotate out the mugs and carafes as needed (Keurigs)?
How important are aesthetics in your kitchen, and is there something about a specific Keurig model (like a color touchscreen, the special color of the machine itself, or nightlight setting) that you really like? Do you like it enough to pay extra for it?
How many cup sizes do you want to be able to accommodate?
What can you afford (don’t forget to take the extra cost of the Keurig carafe into account if you need one)?

What Do They All Have?

The ability to make coffee by the cup or carafe, in different amounts
 Programmability
 Clock
 Ease of use and cleaning
Ability to use pods or any ground coffee you’d like for cups (you can’t use pods with the carafe on the Flexbrew)
 A slim profile

Any model will get the job done. Decide which special features are in your best coffee machine. The Flexbrew is the least expensive but also the least advanced in style and performance. The Keurigs cost more and don’t do much to make the coffee-making experience itself that much different, aside from how many ounces of coffee you can choose to make.
When it comes to the freshest cup of coffee, nothing can beat a batch made from scratch in the comfort of your home. That means you're not just brewing the coffee fresh, but you're making it using freshly ground coffee that you've just finished toasting and roasting yourself. The best home coffee roasters come in all shapes and sizes.
That's right, a home coffee roaster is a must-have for the true coffee connoisseur!
Think about it: what could be fresher than a batch of beans you roast at the moment you want to drink the coffee? You roast the beans, grind it up, and put it through your coffee machine all in one go. There's no time for the antioxidants and oils in the coffee to degrade because everything is made 100% fresh!
Bottom Line Upfront Best Home Coffee Roasters

Behmor 1600 Plus Customizable Drum Coffee Roaster: Best Overall
Gene Cafe CBR-101 Home Coffee Roaster: Best User-Friendly
FreshRoast SR500 Automatic Coffee Bean Roaster: Best Budget-Friendly
Wabash Valley Farms Whirley-Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper: Best Unique Option

https://youtu.be/O-iw4Dy9-s8[/embed]

We've combed through hundreds of products and thousands of reviews to bring you the best home coffee roasters you could ask for:
#1 Best Home Coffee Roaster Pick: Behmor 1600 Plus Customizable Drum Coffee Roaster

This is a drum-style coffee roaster, one that looks a lot like a toaster oven but with a metal cylinder instead of oven trays. You simply pour the beans into the cylinder, turn it on, and roast the beans. You can use it in your kitchen or at the office, thanks to its countertop design and smoke suppression system.

The roaster can hold up to 1 pound of coffee beans, and you can choose from 5 different roast profile settings. There's even a manual roasting override for those who want total control of the roasting process. The quartz roasting elements are controlled via a thermostat, and you'll love how you can adjust the speed of the roasting drum for faster or slowing rotations.

The design is made to be very user-friendly. You'll love how easy it is to load up the roaster, and the chaff separates from the beans for easy post-roasting cleaning. There's even an interior light so you can see how the roasting process is progressing.
If you're looking for a home roaster that gets the job done a large batch at a time, this is the one for you!
User Reviews
There are a lot of positive reviews about this roaster:

"A great price for a great product."
"Excellent roaster overall. It's got some really nice programs if you want to get technical/creative with your roasts. Beans cook evenly, and the light allows the user to check in."
"The Behmor 1600 offers a lot of flexibility in roasting profiles and it is worth trying different settings in search of flavor."

There's also the occasional negative review:

"There's no customer service number for the company. Only email and I've gotten no response back and it's been 2 months and 4 emails."
"We like the roaster but the auto functions shut down too early so we just use it on manual."

Price
Is $350 too high a price to pay for a quality coffee bean roaster you can use at home? Definitely not! It's the priciest of the roasters on our list, but it's worth it if you want total control over the roasting process.

Top Pick: Gene Cafe CBR-101 Home Coffee Roaster
I include this roaster on my list of best home coffee roasters due to its ability to turn half a pound of green beans into fully toasted coffee ready to grind and brew in just 15 minutes. It's a classic cylinder drum roaster, with a roast chamber fully visible so you can keep an eye on the progress of the beans. The little machine comes with multiple airflow and temperature settings, giving you total control over the roasting process.
The roaster is good for small coffee shops or home use, as it can handle decent quantities of beans (8 ounces at a time). The speedy roasting ensures a fresh batch quickly. It's also a very user-friendly, no-mess machine. The chaff collector is easy to empty, and there is a very limited amount of smoke produced by the roaster.
User Reviews
A lot of users have positive things to say about this roaster:

"I have never enjoyed coffee more since I started using this model roaster about 6 years ago."
"It is easy to operate, produces nice roasts and it is good quality. It really works well."
"The coffee roaster is very quiet and easily controllable with both time and temperature at the turn of a knob."

Of course, there were a few drawbacks mentioned as well:

"The amount of smoke it accumulates can get frustrating. Be sure to clean out the chaff collector every roast in order to get consistent roasts."
"Great roaster with great temperature control and usability but a weak heating element."

Price
At $600, this is a bit of a pricey investment for at-home use. However, if you MUST have coffee your way, it's worth considering. It may not be quite as good as the Behmor (our #1 pick), but it's a close second.

Top Pick: FreshRoast SR500 Automatic Coffee Bean Roaster

If you're looking for something a little simpler (and cheaper), this roaster is the one for you!
The roaster doesn't use a drum; instead, it uses a fluid air bed chamber that roasts whatever beans are on the bottom of the container. You'll need to stir the beans as they roast, else risk burning the coffee. However, the roaster is designed to quickly and easily separate the chaff. You also get full control over the heat and fan.

You'll only be able to roast 4 ounces of coffee at a time, so it's not going to handle large quantities of coffee. The lack of a cooling cycle means your beans need to cool on the countertop before grinding and brewing.

Be warned: the roaster does vent smoke during the cooking. You'll need to set it near a window or under your stove's smoke hood to prevent your kitchen from getting smoky.
User Reviews
There are a lot of positive things users have to say about this roaster:

"A really nice roaster with excellent results."
"If you want an affordable roaster that you can get consistent results with provided you make a little extra effort then this is a good buy."
"This item is easier to clean up then the drum roaster and the stove top popper. Coffee tastes great."

Of course, there are a few negative reviews as well:

"I've purchased two of these and they both failed after a short time. Either the fan control, the heat control, or both."
"Worked very well for six weeks. Then the fan quit."

Price
The roaster will run you just under $180—not too pricey, but not the cheapest appliance, either. It's a good alternative to the pricier Behmor coffee roaster if you're looking for something a bit more affordable.

Bonus: Wabash Valley Farms Whirley-Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper

For those who want a unique option for roasting coffee, this stovetop popcorn popper does the trick! All you have to do is fill it with coffee beans instead of popcorn, place it on the stove, and let the fire roast the coffee for you.
The popcorn popper can hold a pretty good amount of coffee (up to a pound at a time), and the built-in stirrer will keep the coffee beans moving as you roast them. The pan is made of sturdy aluminum, with a lid that keeps the heat in for a more even roast. It's beautifully easy to use and clean. Best of all, it will run you just around $30!

Many people have formed a habit of drink a great coffee almost as soon as they wake up in the morning.
Coffee has virtually become something of a tradition and the perfect excuse to meet up with a few friends or colleagues in the morning, or afternoon. If you have been a coffee lover for a considerable length of time, it is highly likely that you have heard of or know these Italian brands: Illy and Lavazza. Yes, the traditional caffé espresso hails from Italy.

Why Italian Ground Coffee?

Recently, the sectors of Italian ground coffee and tea have significantly driven the Italian exportation of agro-food products through the roof, by double-digit percentages. Italian coffee has always been highly rated as one of the best in the world as far back as the early days of the first patented espresso coffee machine. What is more interesting is the fact that coffee is not grown in any part of Italy.
However, Italians have learned and perfected the fine art of roasting coffee beans to create the perfect espresso-based beverages.
Italian roasted coffee beans or Italian coffee beans are well-known globally with numerous displays seen in first-rate coffee shops around the world.

Here are six big Italian coffee brands out there:

 Illy
 Lavazza
 Kimbo
 Danesi
 Segafredo
 Fantini

Let’s take a more in-depth look at illy and Lavazza, leaders in the Italian coffee brand market, and find out what makes them tick in the hearts of espresso lovers around the world today.

A brief history of the production of Italian coffee

In the early days before the general acceptance of this refreshing caffeine-rich beverage, there was stiff opposition in Italy. Back then, members of the church in Italy opposed the introduction of coffee into the country. Some Christian fanatics approached Pope Clement VIII, asking that he should ban the so-called “devil’s drink” and forbid its entrance into the Italian market.
However, when Pope Clement had a taste of the beverage, he liked it tremendously and encouraged its use. Thanks to the blessing of the Pope, coffee became one of the most popular beverages in Italy and rapidly became a household name.
Coffee thrives mostly in tropical regions of the world and comes in two major varieties: Robusta and Arabica. Arabica is among the most common and popular ground coffee amidst several varieties of Italian ground coffees. In fact, Arabica comprises over three-quarters of coffee production globally.
Espresso has Italian origins, not only for the production methods but also with regard to the numerous espresso makers out there. The techniques – as well as the machines – used for producing espressos these days are prevalent in Italy. But it all stemmed from the development of a full-size functional model that was first introduced in 1855 at the Paris World Expo.

Criteria to Follow When it Comes to Choosing or Buying the Best Espresso Beans
1. The quality of the coffee beans

A high-quality machine is a good tool to have in your arsenal if your goal is to start every morning on the right notes. However, no state-of-the-art espresso unit can adequately compensate for the inferior taste of low-quality coffee beans.
There are cheap coffee beans almost everywhere, especially in the department store in your neighborhood. But if you crave for something more energizing and refreshing, you should stay away from substandard coffee beans.
When it comes to choosing the best espresso to buy, the first and most important thing you should look out for and focus your attention on is the color of the coffee beans. Coffee beans may come in light, dark or in-between colors.
The color usually depends on how long the coffee beans have been roasted. If, for instance, the beans have been roasted and have remained in that state for a considerable length of time, the espresso you will get when you use the beans will be very strong. But it will no longer be acidic since the stimulant in coffee and tea, known as caffeine, is burned off.
Dark coffee beans are – as a rule – more oily than their lighter counterparts. Lightly-roasted coffee beans, on the other hand, are significantly sweeter than their opposite numbers.

2. Choose the best origin

Have you ever been in the local supermarket in your neighborhood and found it difficult to decide on the coffee to choose?
This is because there are so many varieties of coffee, types, flavors, brand names, etc. such that you become confused. Since you also have to choose between a myriad of coffee brands out there, it becomes even more difficult for you to know where you should start from. But do not be troubled any longer; this write-up will highlight what you should do.
After checking out the quality of the roasted coffee beans, the next best thing is to find out the source or origin of the beans.
As mentioned earlier, coffee grows exceptionally well in temperate areas, and therefore, different countries that produce coffee provide unique tastes. Asia, Africa, South, and Central America provide only two varieties of coffee: Robusta and Arabica.
If you love to drink coffee that has a good aroma, is light in color and has lots of cream on the top of your early morning cup of espresso, you should go for Arabica coffee beans. But you should bear in mind that Arabica has fewer flavors and lesser caffeine content than its counterpart, Robusta.
Robusta comes with a strong aroma and has lots of caffeine; if you are a fan of caffeine, coffee that is made from Robusta beans will give you that zing that your body craves for every morning.

3. Go for ground coffee

A majority of the coffee beans sold in bags at retail outlets are roasted and previously ground. You can buy these to save some money as well as the time it would take you to grind the coffee beans on your own at home.
In most cases, the grind size of the coffee beans is usually printed on the bag. The grind size of coffee beans also signifies the area that is available for extraction. Keep in mind that the finer the grind size, the more flavor, and caffeine will be extracted.
You should also watch out for mixed ground espressos. Some unscrupulous manufacturers use cheap or low-quality coffee beans and mask them with flavors to hide its bad quality. Therefore, do not go for flavored coffee grounds unless they are from well-known or reputable brands.
Of course, some individuals prefer to do everything all by themselves – including the roasting of the coffee beans. If you belong to this class of people, you are free to purchase raw coffee beans and prepare them according to your preference.
But it takes special skills as well as proficiency to be able to roast your coffee beans. Also bear in mind that after roasting the coffee beans, you may not ground them for about 24 hours. Therefore, make sure that it will not, in any way, affect the grinding process.

4. Keeping your coffee fresh

The aroma of coffee beans also plays a significant role in determining its quality, not just "la flavour". If, for instance, your espresso does not have a good taste or does not provide your desired flavor – in addition to lack of aroma – then that is the first indication that the coffee beans have been over-roasted. When this happens, the oils are lost forever, and there is nothing you can do to replenish the taste or your drink.
One of the limiting factors that can affect that perfect shot you’re aiming for is storage. Although most ground coffee comes in paper bags – which is still not a very suitable way of keeping the coffee fresh – a few of these paper bags come with special layers inside them. These inner layers do an excellent job of preventing the coffee from drying.
However, this protection is temporary and lasts as long as the coffee remains in the grocery store.
The best thing to do to extend or prolong the lifespan of the coffee is to move it to a safer place. But first of all, take a look at the label and search for the date of production, just to be sure that the coffee you are about to buy has not been sitting on that store shelf for a considerably long time.
Keeping your coffee in the refrigerator also robs it of its flavor; so, if you have been practicing this, you should discontinue, unless you’re comfortable with the flavor of your espresso.
Further Reading: Does Coffee Go Bad? A Guide to Coffee Freshness

Illy Coffee Brand

Illy – also known as illycafe – is one of the most popular Italian coffee brands in the world today. The brand name “Illy” was coined from the surname of the founder of the company which is currently under the management of Andrea Illy who represents the third generation of family leadership. Massimiliano Pogliani is the Chief Executive Officer.
The coffee organization had 1,177 employees (as of 31 December 2015) and is present in 140 nations. Illy produces one blend, but in three roast variations; normal, decaffeinated, and dark roast. Illy is known for one signature blend of espresso or coffee which is roasted in different degrees. The signature blend is 100% Arabica blend, but the precise constituents of this coffee blend are not known.
At regular intervals, the company also produces a low-caffeine Arabica – known as Idillyum – which is grown in the volcanic and rich soils of El Salvador. The illy brand of coffee comes packaged in several unique ways: pre-ground coffee, whole beans, iperEspresso capsules, and ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) pods.
Illy stores their coffee in their distinctive 3kg steel canisters and preserves them using methylene chloride as a substitute for oxygen inside the steel canisters. A few years ago, illy launched a variety of single-origin coffee blends – known as Monoarabica – from six different countries: Ethiopia, Guatemala, Brazil, Costa Rica, India, and Colombia.
Illy is also the world’s first coffee company to receive Responsible Supply Chain certification.

The Aroma
Illy is slightly acidic, sharp, and at least one-half to one step above when compared to other big coffee brands out there. When it brews, you will be pleasantly surprised by the improved fragrance, especially after you take a sip or two.

The Flavor
It has a somewhat balanced and mellow flavor. Depending on how long the illy canister has been on the shelf, you may perceive a slight hint of staleness. However, it is still a step above other coffee options out there.
You will love the smooth taste of the coffee and be able to identify the caramel and chocolate notes which do not, in any way, make it an unpleasant experience.
One thing that should be mentioned here is that the brewing method you use may also significantly affect the flavor. The flavor of coffee when brewed from, say a Chemex – using a Chemex brand bonded paper filter – may taste differently when you make the coffee using the drip brew method.
The loss of freshness – after you open the canister and leave it that way for a few days– may also affect the flavor of the coffee. This, however, is not unique to coffee from Illy.

The Grind
The official website states that the ground drip coffee is coarsely ground, but you may be surprised to discover that it is more finely ground than a majority of the coffee brands on the market today.

The Packaging
Illy goes out of their way to ensure that they retain the freshness of their coffee. This is why their product comes in a pressurized, air-free can complete with a metal seal.
To open the canister, you need to pull the metal tab back so that the top peels away. Be careful when opening the can so that the tab doesn’t break off accidentally. You will find it more difficult to open if the tab breaks off by mistake.

The Effect
Illy makes good coffee, no doubt about it. Most people who love to drink coffee from this brand often report that they find themselves making more than a single cup of coffee to get going, especially in the morning.
This, in itself, is a good thing as it will save you money and time. You should also remember that the lighter the roast, the higher the caffeine content of the coffee. Medium roasts appear to be the best, however, as it is more likely to wake you up faster than illy’s dark roast options.

The Pricing
The pricing depends on what you’re looking for. If you need a whole bean or ground coffee, you should expect to pay nothing less than $15 per 8.8-ounce canister. Single serve options usually vary from $14 to $19.
Don’t be put off by the price; you can subscribe and buy a lot of illy canisters at once to save up to 10 percent. You will also get free shipping orders that cost up to $75 or even more. If you can identify the specific coffee type you love to drink and you’re also confident enough to drink it for several weeks or months, you can save even more money by purchasing six canisters of the same variety. This will help you to take the price down by $1 per can.
It is not a good idea to purchase only one canister from illy’s official website as the shipping costs alone may be outrageous. For instance, shipping one canister of illy coffee via FedEx to Georgia costs $7.95.

Therefore, before you go online to place an order for Illy coffee, take the time to check your local grocery stores. You may come across your favorite illy coffee – or at least a variety from illy’s line of coffee products that you’ll love to try first – for a lesser amount (compared to the price on their official website).
This means that you’ll not have to worry about ordering Illy coffee in bulk or pay for shipping. You may have limited selections, though; but then, it is an excellent place to start if you are not too familiar with illy coffees or you want to spark up your adventurous spirit by trying a new one.

The Shopping Experience on the illy.com Website
The grocery stores in your neighborhood may not have Illy coffee. However, you can get the variety you want from the official Illy website.
Illy coffee lovers have reported that the shopping experience they had on the illy.com website was:

Quick and they did not experience any difficulty in finding the illy coffee flavor they were looking for
User-friendly as the site was easy to navigate
Amazingly fast. Don’t be surprised that you can receive a shipment notification in less than 24 hours and the box of Illy coffee on your premises in as little as two days
Not too difficult to checkout with PayPal, a debit card, and a credit card

Best illy coffee products
Here are a few of the best illy coffee products on the market today:

1.
Bottom Line for illy Coffee Brand
Illy coffee is one of the best – much better than a majority of the coffee brands out there on the market these days.

Lavazza Coffee Brand

Lavazza is an Italian manufacturer of a line of coffee products and was established in Turin in 1895 by Luigi Lavazza. The company started out at a small grocery store located at Via San Tommaso 10. The coffee business of Lavazza is presently administered by both the third and fourth generations of the Lavazza family.

Lavazza Coffee
Lavazza imports coffee from all over the world, including:

 Colombia
 Brazil
 Honduras
 Costa Rica
 Indonesia
 Uganda
 United States
 Guatemala
 Mexico

Environmental production concerns have led Lavazza to develop a sustainable agriculture project in Peru, Honduras, and Colombia – known as the ¡Tierra! Project. The program was set up to enhance the quality of coffee as well as to improve the working and environmental conditions of these communities.
Lavazza is branded as “Italy’s Favorite Coffee” and claims that more than sixteen million out of the twenty million coffee purchasing families located in Italy love and choose Lavazza.
Lavazza is not only one of the leading coffee brands in Europe but it also the sixth largest roaster globally as well as a universal provider of coffee, espresso, and single-serve systems for the Out-of-Home and Home markets.

Lavazza Line of Coffee Products
Here are the Lavazza coffee products that are offered (included all the Super Crema varieties):

 Caffè Espresso
 Caffè Crema
 Qualità Oro
 Coffee capsules A Modo Mio
 Lavazza Gold Selection
 Qualità Rosso
 Crema e Aroma
 Grand'Espresso
 Lavazza Gran Selezione
 Crema e Gusto
 Gran Aroma Bar
 Lavazza Santa Marta
 Il Perfetto Espresso, etc.

The Top Lavazza Coffees
1: Lavazza Super Crema Espresso

The best place to start for beginners or those looking for a versatile coffee
Available in whole bean form for those who can grind their coffee beans at home. Pods are simple, requiring fewer steps to make coffee. They’re very quick to use but can be more expensive, plus, there’s more of an environmental impact.
Illy’s iperEspresso capsule system has a patented two-stage process, the first being hyper-infusion (this is the part that happens inside the capsule), where the coffee is infused with water under high pressure, which extracts more flavor.
The second stage is emulsification, which forces the coffee through the e-valve where oils are emulsified, giving the espresso richness and flavor. This means you might be able to recapture some of the flavor lost from other coffee pods.
Some people prefer to buy coffee grounds or even whole beans that they grind each day. (See below for more information on machines with built-in grinders). Some people prefer the freshness and flavour of newly-ground coffee beans. However, at the time of writing, illy is not manufacturing espresso machines using coffee grounds – so you will have to choose another company if this is the case.

Grinding Power
Some espresso machines come with a built-in grinder. If not, you’ll need to get a separate grinder (these can be automatic or manual). Machines with built-in grinders tend to be much more expensive, but they are convenient. Some even drop the coffee grounds into the basket automatically, making it really easy to use.
If you have a large number of people using the same machine, make sure you get a grinder with a high capacity, to save you constantly having to refill.
Again, if you’re using pods – this is not something you have to worry about.
Durability
If you plan on making a lot of espressos, you need to have a machine that can handle it. A cheap espresso machine might break down quickly if you demand a lot from it, but a more expensive model (or even a professional-grade model for coffee shops) should be able to work all day with no issues.
You may find that your espresso machine eventually breaks down after years of regular use. This is normal, but you can expect a few good years of use out of your new machine.
Water Capacity
The average espresso machine holds enough water to make 8 cups of espresso – which is usually plenty for most people. Large espresso machines may be able to connect to a water source, but these tend to be professional-grade models. Some machines are designed to be very simple to refill, so you can quickly top up again if you need to make a lot of espressos at once.
Ease of Cleaning
This is an important one. You’ll quickly grow to resent your espresso machine if you want to use it often but find it fiddly or difficult to clean. Any areas that are exposed to moisture need to be cleaned and thoroughly dried after use to prevent rusting. These can include the water receptacle, the frother, and the cups.
Aesthetics

There are some beautifully designed machines out there. If you have it on your kitchen counter, chances are, you want it to look stylish. There are a lot of great options to choose from, in a variety of colors and styles. Illy machines are great for this, as some of them are designed by Italian architects – so they look sleek.
You might want a model that is curved or a model that fits into a tight space. Or, you might want one that illuminates the espresso cup as it brews – these small things can bring a touch of luxury into your home.
Cord Length and Storage
Where are you going to keep your machine? Find out the dimensions first, to check if it will fit in the desired spot. It’s also a good idea to check the cord length. Some models can have short cords, which can be an issue if you want it to fit into a certain space.
Frothing
If you like lattes, macchiatos, or cappuccinos, make sure you get a machine that comes with a frother. This can froth pressurized milk, giving you the foamy consistency you want from a good cappuccino.
Programmable
You may want your espresso machine to be programmable – this allows it to switch on at certain times. If you’re after convenience, this is a good option. After all, there’s nothing quite like waking up to the smell of freshly made coffee first thing in the morning.
Coffee Types
You can make different types of coffee with the illy coffee machine (depending on the model you choose). These can include:

Lattes
Cappuccinos
Macchiatos
Long Blacks
Mochas
Americanos
Lungo
Flat Whites

Some espresso machines heat water for tea and hot chocolate, too.
Cup Size
Some espresso machines require a certain type of cup to fit the machine. Others can be adjusted, so you can create different types of coffee using other sizes of the cup. Buying specific cups can be an unexpected extra cost, so make sure you bear that in mind when you’re looking for a new one.
Now, let’s take a look at each model in detail.
Francis Francis X7.1 Iperespresso Machine – Most Stylish Espresso Machine

If you want a stylish option using pods, this might be the one for you. The Francis Francis X7.1 has an unusual curved design with two color options and soft-touch buttons. It’s a statement piece for sure, designed by the Italian architect Luca Trazzi.
It’s also got a lot of great features. It has a one-touch brewing cycle for a hands-off experience. It has the Pannarello steam wand, which makes frothing milk simply. The power save mode and automatic descaling is great, too. Plus, the extraction of the coffee happens inside the capsule – making the whole machine much easier to clean up.
It’s pretty simple to use. The user reviews are good, too, with people praising its simplicity and beautiful design.
However, like all machines, it does have its downsides: there isn’t a display that shows if you have switched from manual to automatic mode, and a couple of people found that the steam nozzle broke after a while. Illy’s customer service is pretty good, which helps, but it’s still a bit of a pain. You can see the latest price for it here.
Specifications

Size: 11.4 x 10.2 x 12.6in
Colour Options: Red, Black
Coffee Types: Espresso, Cappuccino, Café Latte, Lungo
Cord Length: 39in
Water tank size: 40oz

Pros

Beautiful design
Simple to use
Easy to clean

Cons

No display to show if in automatic or manual mode
Some users had issues with the steam nozzle after a while

It comes in some nice colors, too, including blue and white.
It’s a pod-based system, and it has two programmable coffee settings. It fits almost any cup size – so no need to worry about buying new cups. You can enjoy brewed coffee or espresso, and it also has automatic ejection of used capsules (up to 7 capsules can fit in the drawer).
You can enjoy an espresso, lungo, cappuccino, or latte with this illy coffee machine. It’s a great choice if you’re on a tight budget, with its competitive price point.
Reviewers praised the compact size and neat appearance of this machine, and state that the coffee tastes just as good as if it came from a coffee shop. Some, however, had issues with the longevity of the machine, finding it broke down after a certain period of time. Although it comes with a warranty, this only covers one year from purchase. If you want something that makes something other than espressos, this could work really well for you. It makes brewed coffee, cappuccinos, espressos, lattes, and it heats water for tea and hot chocolate, too. Perfect if you want something more versatile.
This machine is bigger than some of the others on our list. It looks stylish, however, in black, red, almond, or grey color options. It is made entirely of metal and uses the retro illy logo. It’s also curved – so, similarly to the Francis Francis X7.1, it looks very attractive.
The steam wand froths milk nicely. It also has a removable cup support tray – so you can swap it out for espresso cups, mugs, and cappuccino cups. It’s simple to use, and users praise this model for how beautiful it looks in their kitchens.
On the downside, the coffee pods (not the espresso pods) can be difficult to get hold of at times, so you may need to look online to find them.
Illy 60208 y5 Espresso Machine – Good All-Rounder

This is a great espresso machine that works really well. It looks good, with a simple rectangular design with an attractive tempered glass top. Given the compact size, it can hold a decent amount of water at 30oz. It can also store up to ten used capsules.
It has an adjustable cup shelf, so you can switch sizes if you want to.
There’s not a huge amount to say about this one – it does what it says on the tin. If you want a basic illy machine, this could be a good choice. One user found the buttons on the screen stopped working after a while. However, it does come with a one-year warranty, so if you do encounter problems within the first year, you should be covered. You can find the latest price here.
Specifications

Size: 5.7 x 11.2 x 9.6in
Colour Options: Black
Coffee Types: Espresso, Cappuccino, Café Latte, Lungo
Cord Length: 39in
Water tank size: 30oz

Pros

Compact and stylish
Easy to use
Used capsules are stored inside
Coffee tastes great

Cons

Some users found parts broke down after a while

It looks compact but stylish and will fit nicely into many homes. The LED light illuminates the cup during brewing, which is a nice touch. It’s available in chrome, black, and red.
The X9 has a few interesting features – part of the water tank can be removed and refilled, even while the X9 is running (this is helpful as the capacity is on the lower side at 23.7oz). This makes it easier to refill if you’re making a large number of espressos in one go.
You can also select two in-cup volumes using the control buttons. Users were quick to praise this machine, with some stating they had rebought it after 5 years of regular use – so it seems to be robust.
